Consensus through Conversation How to Achieve High-Commitment Decisions
Head: (4.5 of 5)

Leadership Applicability: (4.5 of 5)
Consensus through Conversation offers a unique look at the misunderstood and often underutilized method of consensus decision-making. Many business leaders avoid consensus based decisions because they feel they are giving up too much power and control over the process. Author Larry Dressler sheds light on why many of today's leaders should begin to re-engage, or at least reconsider, using consensus for certain decison-making scenarios. Dressler shares that, when used at the proper times, consensus based decision-making can yield both higher quality and higher commitment decisions. The problem arises when consensus decision-making is used improperly or for the wrong types of decisions. This is where Consensus through Conversation becomes an extremely valuable tool. The book shares how and when to apply consensus and is broken into the following sections: - What is Consensus?
- How do I Prepare?
- What are the Basis Steps?
- How do I Work with Disagreement?
- Six Traps that Undermine Consensus
- Ten Tips for Better Consensus Meetings
- Towards High-Commitment Decisions
Effective decision-making practices are critical in supporting long term organizational performance. Dressler's book supports this belief by describing how to bring long term improvement to decision-making throughout the entire organization. He feels the insights described shouldn't be aimed exclusively at business leaders and upper management, thus its applicable to anyone. Consensus through Conversation brings to light why conversation is critical to decision-making and lasting change. The book is approachable, is less than 100 pages in length (great for a plane ride), and contains very useful case examples, key points, and tools. Buy it.
