Leadership that Gets Results

Goleman explains how effective leaders use more than one style of management to adjust to various situations. Six styles of leadership -- coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting, and coaching -- are described within the context of different organizational climates and cultures. Goleman goes beyond the traditional "situational" leadership concepts by 1) integrating "emotional intelligence" as primary to the model, and 2) giving relevant examples of practices associated with each style. This article is especially useful for leaders in fast-paced organizations (that primarily use the pace-setting and coercive styles) to open up to other effective practices like participatory decision-making (democratic), brainstorming (affiliative), and mutual problem-solving (coaching).
